Your wastewater is worth money
"By analyzing value streams from waste water, companies can make a profit on multiple fronts." With a simple calculation, Willem Tomassen shows that it is smart to critically view the management of waste water. Incidentally, not only because of the financial benefits, but also with a look at the environment and the future.
Many advantages
"Large food producers are often involved in fermentation, which releases methane gas that can be used as biogas. But this has a low yield and often a big opportunity is ignored: filtering waste water for nutrients such as fats, proteins and carbohydrates." That has several advantages, continues Willem Tomassen, food technology consultant at Orangeworks: "You have valuable nutrients at your disposal for use or sale, you generate clean water of food quality to reuse as steam or rinse water, it is more environmentally friendly and you save money on the disposal of waste water. "
Profit within a year
For companies with, for example, a lot of fats in the waste water, filtration is really valuable. "For example, animal fats are worth 70 cents per kilo and can be reused as biodiesel, the value of which will increase in the coming years." For one of our clients, a manufacturer of margarines and oils, we made a simple calculation: an investment of 350.000 euros in a watermanagement system can generate 1 million euros within one year. With profits coming from the sale of fats, savings on water and CO2 reduction. "
CO2 reduction
Sustainable production is not only an ethical choice, it can also be cost-effective. Tomassen. "It is likely that companies will soon be faced with obligations on CO2 reduction: by removing nutrients from the waste streams and reusing the fats for heating your own installation, you will reduce the CO2 emissions, which means that the benefits are twofold: you pay less CO2 tax and you get more value from your waste stream. " Incidentally, this is also an important point with a view to the future: "Shortages will start occurring in raw materials, such as protein, but fresh water will also become scarce." By looking forward and consciously working on cleaning your waste water you are not only cost-effective but also smart and sustainable. "
Payback model
Tomassen gives a specific example of a payback model for an Orangeworks customer: "We have designed a relatively inexpensive filtration system for them: the first year they extract the fats out of their waste water, and with the profits from the sale of those they can invest in the installation for the filtering of carbohydrates in the second year and in the following year they take on filtering of proteins. Within three years the watermanagement system has paid for itself. All subsequent returns are pure profit. "
Customization for you
Orangeworks can integrate a filtration skid into existing production lines as well as make it a part of a newly build skid. We always look for an integrated technological approach, because water management of waste water is, by definition, customization.
